Find your footing in Gomoku
Use a short break to learn the rhythm of Gomoku. Make five or more connected stones horizontally, vertically or diagonally. A full board without a line is a draw. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls. Check the rule that explains your first action. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move.
Something to practise
After a move, check what changed. Decide which rule explains the new state before acting again. Refer to the controls when needed.
The objective of a round
Make five or more connected stones horizontally, vertically or diagonally. A full board without a line is a draw. Keep that objective in view throughout the round. Try to explain the aim in your own words.
A walkthrough of the rules
- Player 1 places the first stone on an empty intersection.
- Player 2 places a stone and turns alternate.
- Look for open lines and block your opponent’s threats.
- A winning line immediately ends the round.
Your inputs
Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. On a smaller screen, keep the active part of the board within view. Avoid pressing the same control repeatedly while a move is being processed.
One way to understand the rules
Four consecutive stones with an empty point at both ends creates two possible finishing moves. Focus on why the action is allowed, not only its outcome. Read the matching step again.
Watch out for this
This is freestyle Gomoku, not Renju: there are no special forbidden opening or double-three rules. Read the feedback to see why an action did not have the expected result. When a decision goes wrong, compare it with the common mistake described below. Start again only when you intend to leave the current round.
