15 Puzzle: what to know before playing

Open 15 Puzzle, check the instructions and begin a round. Arrange 1 to 15 in reading order with the empty square at the bottom right. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Begin with the solo mode shown on the page. Look at what changes after your first action.

Take a closer look while playing

Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use. Notice the feedback after each input.

The purpose of your moves

Arrange 1 to 15 in reading order with the empty square at the bottom right. The feedback beside the game helps you follow the round. Notice how the game responds to your input.

Making your moves

  1. Select a tile directly beside the empty square.
  2. The tile slides into the gap; diagonal moves are not allowed.
  3. Use Undo to step back one move.
  4. Finish the ordered board, or choose New puzzle.

Input guidance

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. Read a button’s label before selecting it. Use one clear input at a time.

An example before you play

When the gap is in the last square, only the tile above it and the tile to its left can move into it. Use the example as a guide rather than a substitute for reading your board. Take a moment to compare.

Check this before moving on

A distant tile cannot jump across other tiles. Check the rule before repeating the action. When a decision goes wrong, compare it with the common mistake described below. Start again only when you intend to leave the current round.
